Some time to laugh as a mushroom expert

20 Mar

A lady calls me, she wants to buy button mushroom spawn. We agree on price and collection times. As usual I want to know more about the client: where they are, their system and all. Than I smelt a rat and asked the client to call me as a matter of urgency and she did and here is what she wanted to do.

1. Buy well decomposed compost And she says it must be 5 years old, she had made an order for it (I wonder who had 5 years old compost)

2. She had access to some sawdust if the compost wasn’t enough.

At this point I was laughing hysterically and tears were flowing (tears of laughter)

Where did you get all this????? I asked.

1. She had seen my whatsapp profile for the shelves.

2. Internet

To do all this she was going to use a bank loan. All I said was I saved you.

New growers need take time research, get trained and/or be assisted by a good consultant. This lady was blank and rushing to make money. I hope this makes you laugh too if you are already a grower.

What do you think we need do as growers to alleviate theseĀ  challenges.

Compost quality crucial for yields

Most growers rush or do not pay necessary attention to compost quality which is very crucial to the final yields. All the other stages are important but everything done revolves around the compost. Its important to ensure you reach the desired temperature levels before every turn and most growers do not condition their compost. Starting nitrogen must also be accurately calculated. This is just a brief and reminder, I encourage you to read widely on phase1 and phase 2 composting. Would you like to share with me how you make your compost?
